Day trips around Tarifa

Gibraltar, natural parks and the towns of the Costa de la Luz

Around Tarifa on the Costa de la Luz lie Gibraltar, the old town of Vejer de la Frontera, Zahara de los Atunes and the Estrecho and Los Alcornocales natural parks. Since 15 July 2026 there have been no routine checks at the land border with Gibraltar.

Day trips from Tarifa at a glance

Tarifa lies on the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. The municipality is part of two natural parks: the Parque Natural del Estrecho covers the coast and sea on the Strait, and Los Alcornocales reaches from the hills down to the beaches of Tarifa. These are the main destinations for day trips:

  • Gibraltar, with no routine checks at the land border since July 2026
  • Parque Natural del Estrecho, with the Bolonia dune and Playa de los Lances
  • Los Alcornocales natural park, from the hills of the province of Cádiz down to the coast
  • Vejer de la Frontera, a protected historic town on a high headland
  • Zahara de los Atunes, a village with a fortress where tuna was once processed
  • Bolonia and Baelo Claudia, a shifting dune and a Roman town on the same bay
  • Tangier, by ferry from the port of Tarifa

Gibraltar

On 14 July 2026, the treaty on Gibraltar's future relationship with the EU was signed in Brussels. It creates a lasting framework for a fluid land border between Gibraltar and Spain and has been provisionally applied since 15 July 2026. The border barrier has been removed, and there are no longer routine checks at the land border. The Government of Gibraltar has warned of teething problems in the early days.

The airport is different: if you land in Gibraltar, you pass through Gibraltar and Schengen checks and must meet the Schengen entry requirements. The airport is right on the border with Spain and is also an option for getting to Tarifa; more on this under Airports. Current information on the border is available from the Government of Gibraltar.

Parque Natural del Estrecho

The Parque Natural del Estrecho was created in 2003 and lies in the municipalities of Tarifa and Algeciras, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. It covers both land and sea: more than 60 km of coastline belongs to it, and about half its area is at sea. Since 2006 it has been part of the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean.

Its coast includes the Bolonia dune, a natural monument since 2001, and Playa de los Lances, which together with the park has been a special protection area for birds since 2003. The Levante and Poniente winds affect bird migration. Isla de las Palomas off the port is also part of the park. Dolphins and pilot whales live in the Strait, and trips to see whales and dolphins start from the port of Tarifa.

There are two information points on the N-340:

  • Del Estrecho information point at km 77.5, near Tarifa
  • Huerta Grande visitor centre at km 96, near Algeciras

The protected area and its rules are described on the page about the Parque Natural del Estrecho by the Junta de Andalucía, the regional government.

Los Alcornocales natural park

The Los Alcornocales natural park was created in 1989 and lies in the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga. It runs as a strip from the foothills of the sierras of the province of Cádiz down to the beaches of Tarifa, which is one of its municipalities. Like the Parque Natural del Estrecho, it has been part of the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean since 2006. More about the protected area is on the Junta de Andalucía's page about the Los Alcornocales natural park.

Vejer de la Frontera and Zahara de los Atunes

Vejer de la Frontera sits on a high headland, and its townscape dates back to the Muslim period. The town has been a protected Conjunto histórico-artístico since 1976. Information about the town and tourism is available from the Vejer town council.

Zahara de los Atunes belongs to the municipality of Barbate, while the beaches of Atlanterra are still part of Tarifa. In Zahara stands a fortress mentioned as early as the 16th century. It was used to process and store tuna and as a store for fishing gear and boats. The fortress is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, and since 2004 also with a defined protection zone around the monument.

Bolonia, Baelo Claudia and Tangier

In the bay of Bolonia stands an active shifting dune over 30 m high. The CA-8202 leads to Bolonia from km 71 of the N-340. Near the dune lie the ruins of the Roman town of Baelo Claudia, with its forum, theatre and fish-salting quarter.

From the port of Tarifa, ferries cross the Strait to Tanger Ville, the city port of Tangier in Morocco. British nationals need a passport that is still valid for at least three months when they arrive. More on this under Day trip to Tangier and Tarifa - Tangier ferry.

How to get to Tarifa is covered under Getting there and Airports. What to see in the town itself is under Things to do, and the places to swim from Los Lances to Bolonia under Beaches.
