Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno

The 10th-century castle stands by Tarifa's port on the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno was built in 960 on the orders of Caliph Abd al-Rahman III and is where Tarifa's fortifications began. It is named after Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, who defended the castle after the Christian conquest of 1292. A visit includes exhibition rooms and the wall walk along the top of the walls.

Caliphal castle by the port

The Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno stands by the port of Tarifa on the Strait of Gibraltar and borders the old town, right next to the Iglesia de Santa María. The castle is protected as a Monumento Histórico Nacional and a Bien de Interés Cultural. At its core is a caliphal fortress, a 10th-century alcazaba. What you see today is a combination of gates, towers and walls from every period. The castle is run by the Ayuntamiento de Tarifa, the town council.

History of the castle

Caliph Abd al-Rahman III ordered the castle to be built in 960, and it is where the town's present fortifications began. The name Tarifa is traced back either to the Berber Tarif, who led a raid in 710, or to the Arabic word tarf, meaning point or end. From the 11th century, under the North African empires of the Almoravids, Almohads and Marinids, Tarifa was one of the most important crossing ports on the Strait.

In 1292 King Sancho IV captured the town. Shortly afterwards the alcaide Alonso Pérez de Guzmán defended the castle, and according to tradition he chose to sacrifice his son rather than surrender it to the Muslims. The castle is named after this event. From the 15th century to the time of the first Marqués de Tarifa in the 16th century, the complex took on the character of a palace. It was used by the military for around a thousand years and passed into civilian hands in 1989. Excavation and restoration have been under way ever since.

Tour, exhibitions and wall walk

The castle's building phases range from the caliphal period in the 10th century through the Almoravid, Almohad and Christian periods to modern times and the present day. The tour takes in the Torre de Guzmán El Bueno, the Puerta del Mar, the Torre del homenaje (keep), the stairway up to the Torre Octogonal and the gate with the foundation inscription, among others. From one viewpoint you look out over the port and Isla de las Palomas, and from a panoramic point across the Strait all the way to Africa. The wall walk, the adarve, takes you along the top of the castle wall.

The room on building techniques explains the two wall-building methods “soga y tizón” and rammed earth (tapial). The “Tarifa fortificada” room shows armour, replicas of medieval and early modern weapons and plans of the castle and town. The Sala del Mar traces Tarifa's history from prehistoric times to the present day. There is also the Centro de Interpretación, which has two entrances within the castle grounds.
